Chanel – know what makes the real deal

At Reebonz we are utterly obsessed with making sure, all items that we offer to you are original. And so, we are not afraid to walk the talk, and let you know exactly what you should be looking for in an original bag.

But first, we must answer the question: how can Reebonz even have Chanel up on sale? Isn’t it known, that Chanel never allows their bags to be sold outside of their outlets, and any bag with even the slightest imperfection is shredded and destroyed, to prevent the piece to be out in the market.

At Reebonz we carry a line of vintage Chanel bags. The bags have been owned before, but we only carry pieces in mint conditions, and each and every bag is lovingly restored and cleaned, before it can appear on our website.

Markers of an original bag that you should know are:

1. Leather – a leather of a Chanel bag is unmistakably “buttery soft”, and is most often made of lambskin. There are some guides out there, that claim that Chanel uses only calfskin, but that is not accurate.

2. Quilting – if the Chanel bag is quilted with the classic diamond or square pattern, expect the highest level of craftsmanship. The shapes will be perfectly aligned, and of perfect shapes, as the sides of each square or diamond should all be equal in length. The lines of the quilting will line up exactly over pocket seams and flaps. Also, expect very dense stitching – a count of more than 10+ stitches in 1”inch

3. Logo – Check the logo. The Chanel logo is comprised of two interlocking “C” letters that face away from each other. The top of the right-facing “C” should bisect the top of the left-facing “C”. However, some vintage bags might have this reversed. Also, this rule does not apply to other accessories, just bags.

Take note of the bulk of the logo. The original “CC”s are not too broad, and should retain a classy balanced sleekness, so often butchered in counterfeit versions.

4. Quilting on the back pocket – the alignment of the stitching has to be PERFECT. No excuses!

5. The chain – the chain in real Chanel bags has some weight to it.

6. The back plate of the twist lock – this is the most sensitive area, where you can spot a fake. In real Chanel bags you will see “Chanel Paris” engraved vertically, in a “left to right” order, with Chanel on the left, and “Paris” on the right.

7. The serial sticker – you will find the authenticity sticker in the inner left corner of the bag, however it is possible, that you will find the sticker in one of the zipped compartments.

8. The number on the sticker – what is printed on the sticker can help verify the authenticity, but do keep in mind, that there are plenty of rules and nuances applied to how the serial number is presented. This was implemented by Chanel to further help them distinct their bags from the fake crowd. Some rules about the serial number:

- it will not smudge or fade. The numbers should be clearly visible, unless the bag is from a really old series.
- the serial number should comprise of 7 digits, however in early series, Chanel did omit number “0″ from the stickers, but you can still see the “0″ printed on the authenticity card. So the sticker would only have 6 digits.
- if the serial number starts with “1″, the number should be with serifs. However, if the serial number does not start with “1″, any subsequent “1″ will be sans-serif.

9. Authenticity card – it should be printed in high quality and with great care to the alignment. The print will be clean and crisp.

We hope this guide will allow you to easily recognize the real Chanel craftsmanship from the inferior standards of counterfeit bags.
